Aquarium heaters are an essential piece of equipment for the tropical fish keeper. They raise the water temperature to a certain level and prevent it from falling below that specified temperature. You will also need a thermometer to accurately measure the correct temperature. Tropical fish require a temperature between 75 and 80 degrees to insure their health and well-being. Be sure to unplug your aquarium heater during water changes as exposure to air and re-exposure to the water can cause the aquarium heater to crack or explode.
