Chemical Filtration Media - These media usually come in their own containers and are used to remove unwanted dissolved compounds in the aquarium water. These compounds may include odors, ammonia, colors, nitrites, phosphates and nitrates.
Biological Filtration Media - This media is used to provide a surface area to grow beneficial bacteria which will break down harmful ammonia and nitrites into less harmful nitrates. This media comes in the form of cubes, beads, tubes and balls.
